Tutorial on how to draw a helical spring in SolidWorks. To draw a helical spring first we will draw a circular helix and then use the sweep feature of solidworks to sweep a profile resulting in a spring.

Step by step instructions to make a spring
1) Open Solidworks and click on new and then click on part and click ok as shown.

2) Then click on front plane and you will see a small menu appearing near your mouse. Click on normal to button in that menu. Now the front plane reorients itself.
Now in the dashboard to to features click on curves -> helix and spiral as shown in figure Now draw a circle of 2inch diameter and exit the sketch by clicking exit sketch button . Now you will see the helix setting menu in left hand side as shown in figure below. Select Height and pitch in defined by section and set height as 10in, pitch as 1inch, starting angle as zero an d exit the feature by clicking the greet tick and you end up with a helix as shown.

3) Now select the right plane and click normal to and sketch buttons and draw a circle of .25 diameter. Now select the center of the circle and click on Display/Delete Relations -> add relation as shown and select the helix as the other member of the relation. Select the relationship as pierce .
Now exit the relations dashboard and the sketch. |
4) Go to the features dashboard then click on sweep boss/base
then select the circle we have just drawn as the profile to sweep and the helix as the path to sweep as shown in figure. and exit the sweep tool. you will see the final spring as |
